Strobist – Off-camera Flash workshop

Strobist – Off-Camera Flash workshop (OCF)

As a Barnsley Wedding Photographer and even a Lake District Wedding Photographer one of the things we must always be doing is pushing ourselves to learn more & more to improve the range of services and images we can capture for our clients, in recent years it has become increasingly popular to include some form of stylised portraiture into a Wedding, and especially into contemporary portraiture, by the use of additional lighting sources in a way that was once only possible in a studio

Barnsley Wedding Photographer - OCF Strobist workshop

Most photographers buy a flashgun at some point, these stand alone units sit on the camera’s hotshoe and usually work in conjunction with the camera’s electronics to render accurately exposed images, but the lighting they produce can be a both harsh and flat in many cases. Taking that same flashgun off-camera allows for a HUGELY improved range of lighting options and its that aspect that this course will cover in detail

The internet is awash with people shooting in this way now, and to my mind largely over-complicating things for little obvious benefit, and they collectively go by the name ‘Strobist’

Strobists are then just photographers who like to use small flashguns that aren’t attached to their camera directly, hence Off-Camera Flash – OCF

What this OCF workshop aims to do is to introduce you to how you can create striking images with very simple equipment that many photographers will have in their kit-bag but perhaps aren’t getting the best out of

What you’ll be learning on this OCF workshop

  • all about lighting patterns and what suits what type of client and their specific features
  • how shooting Strobist differs from ‘normal’ ambient light photography in terms of location finding
  • what simple and relatively cheap modifiers can be used, both in the home and (as in these examples) outdoors
  • that you really don’t need to spend a lot of money to get great results, whether that’s of a model as here, or your own family & children, or even your dog!
  • if you have your own gear then that’s what you’ll be using rather than mine, its much better to earn to use what you have bought isn’t it – of course if you haven’t any yet then you’ll be using mine
  • if you haven’t yet bought into a Strobist set-up then you’ll be far better armed with an idea of what you need to buy to get started
  • post the course we’ll then share images and discuss some basic processing of them too

Here’s a range of OCF images the likes of which you’ll be shooting on the day

and learning how to recreate the same sort of images when

you’re back home and shooting for yourself
